Hygiene Squeegees: A Practical Guide for Food Production Sites
Hygiene SqueegeesΒ play a vital role in keeping food production environments clean, safe and
audit-ready. By controlling moisture and removing debris, they help reduce contamination risk, protect product integrity and support compliance with food safety standards.
This guide answers the most common questions about hygiene squeegees. It explains how they work and what to consider when selecting the right blade, handle, size and colour.

How does a hygiene squeegee work?
Hygiene Squeegees are designed to remove moisture, condensation and debris from smooth surfaces commonly found in food production environments. These include floors, walls, ceilings, doors, vats, tanks and food processing equipment.
They work by using the principle of surface tension. As the blade passes over a surface, it breaks the bond that holds liquid in place and channels it away. This leaves the surface clean and dry.
This process is particularly important in food production environments, where excess moisture can create ideal conditions for mould growth and airborne bacteria.

Why is moisture control critical in food production envrionments?
Moisture control is critical in food production because condensation is a recognised food safety hazard. Version 9 of the BRCGS Global Food Safety Standard specifically identifies condensation as a risk that needs to be controlled.
-
Clause 4.4.1 requires walls and surfaces to be finished in a way that minimises condensation and mould growth
-
Clause 4.4.10 calls for adequate ventilation and extraction to prevent condensation
With auditors actively looking for signs of moisture build-up, staining or mould, the effective removal of excess water is an essential part of audit compliance. This is where hygiene squeegees play an essential role.
Single blade vs double blade squeegees: whatβs the difference?
One of the most important decisions when selecting a hygiene squeegee is whether to choose a single or double blade design. Both options have clear advantages, and the right choice will depend on your environment, floor condition and cleaning requirements. At Klipspringer, we supply both designs because no two sites are the same.
If you are unsure which model is best suited to your application, the guidance below will help. You can also speak to our team on 01473 461800Β orΒ sales@klipspringer.com.
Single-Blade Squeegee
Best suited to controlled environments with relatively smooth, even surfaces.

Double-Blade Squeegee
Designed for higher-efficiency cleaning and more challenging floor conditions.

- Hygienic design: no crevices or corners
- Angled blade to reach corners and edges
- Prevents splash back and deflects spray
- Resistant to knocks, bangs, and scratches
- Clean strokes: no drag, no bounce
- Scraper nose for removing solid residue
- Replaceable cartridge to extend lifespan
- Double blade for cleaning efficiency
- Ideal for uneven and broken floor surfaces
- Improved hygienic design, easy-to-clean
- Push and pull functionality
- Extra-smooth surface with minimal crevices
A Hygiene Manager’s feedback on the Hygienic Double Blade Squeegee
βThe rubber blades feel robust and firm on floor surfaces, allowing them to effectively grip debris and liquid and remove both in a single pass. I compared the Hygienic Double Blade Squeegee to our current squeegee. The Klipspringer version appears to have fewer harbourage areas, and the rubber blades are easier to remove.β
What is the purpose of a pivot head?
A squeegee with a pivot head allows you to work at different angles. It is particularly useful when it comes to cleaning underneath equipment that is fixed in place. It will also support long-reach and high-reach cleaning.Β Β
In addition to this, a pivot head should help to minimise any damage to the squeegee, as instead of being knocked against corners and edges, it will simply glide around them.

When would I use a handheld squeegee?
Handheld squeegeesΒ are ideal for targeted cleaning tasks that require precision and controlled pressure. They are commonly used on machinery and equipment surfaces, conveyor belts, and small floor areas, including drainage points.
Made from food-contact approved materials, handheld squeegees can be safely used by both hygiene and production teams, ensuring effective cleaning without compromising food safety.

What handle should I use with my hygiene squeegee?
The right handle can make a big difference to comfort, efficiency, and safety. When choosing a squeegee handle, there are several factors to consider.
Temperature protection
In cold environments, handles with an insulated or sheathed grip help protect operativesβ hands.
Ergonomics
Coloured sheaths can also improve grip and reduce strain during prolonged use.
Material
Aluminium offers maximum durability, nylon-reinforced polypropylene combines strength with reduced weight, and combination designs balance performance with ease of use.

Reach
Fixed-length handles for standard applications. Or, telescopic handles for high ledges, ceilings, and difficult-to-reach areas
All Klipspringer squeegees are compatible with our standard range of colour-coded hygiene handles. If you have questions about which option is right for your site, you can contact us onΒ 01473 461800Β orΒ sales@klipspringer.com.
How does a condensation squeegee work and when would I use one?
As you will know, a lot of factories are incredibly damp, with plenty of condensation. If this is the case at your site, a condensation squeegee could help your operatives to remove this moisture quickly and effectively. A simple process, the liquid collects in the squeegee head, runs down the inside of the water-fed handle, and is stored in a sealed bottle ready for emptying.
Instead of running the risk of condensation laden with bacteria dripping down your factory walls or onto your equipment and even your product, this solution will allow you to manage the moisture in the safest way possible.

What different squeegee sizes are available?
Squeegees are available in a wide range of head widths, and when paired with different handle lengths, itβs easy to find a combination that meets the specific needs of your site. Klipspringer holds the following sizes in stock for next day delivery on orders placed before 4pm.

Choosing the right squeegee for your hygiene application
Different areas of a food production site present unique cleaning challenges, and selecting the right squeegee can make a real difference.
-
Floors and large open areas: Single blade squeegees work well on smooth, even floors. Double blade models are better suited to uneven surfaces or areas where efficiency is key, clearing large amounts of liquid quickly.
-
Machinery and equipment surfaces: Handheld squeegees offer precision and control, ideal for conveyor belts, vats, tanks, and other equipment where targeted cleaning is required.
-
Walls, ceilings, and high-reach areas: Condensation squeegees help manage moisture and debris in hard-to-reach spaces, preventing mould growth and supporting hygiene standards.
-
Tight corners and underneath machinery: Pivot-head squeegees glide around edges and obstacles, reducing squeegee wear and enabling thorough cleaning without damaging surfaces.
-
Angled edges and corners: Single blade squeegees with angled blades are ideal for reaching corners or moving along edges where walls meet floors.
Using the right squeegee for each area ensures faster, safer, and more effective cleaning while helping maintain hygiene compliance across your site.
You now have answers to the most common questions about hygiene squeegees and how they help keep your site clean and compliant.
