To better support food factories with the Electrochemical Analysis of their products and ingredients, we have launched a range of pH, Conductivity, and ORP Pocket Testers.

From random spot-tests of incoming goods to routine quality checks of finished products, Electrochemical Analysis occurs throughout the production process.

Depending on the applications and risk levels of a site, some factories test for a combination of key parameters like pH, Conductivity, ORP, Salinity, TDS, and Temperature. Whereas, other factories monitor just one or two.

With this in mind, Klipspringer has launched a new range of Electrochemical Pocket Testers – featuring individual pH, Conductivity, and ORP meters, alongside multi-parameter instruments. There is also a choice between meters with fixed and replaceable electrodes.

With so many options available, we wanted to talk you through the range – giving you the details you need to find the right pH, Conductivity, ORP, or multi-parameter testers for your site.

pH Pocket Testers

Food factories use pH Pocket Testers for several important reasons:

pH relates to food safety, with some strains of bacteria unable to grow below a certain level. Fermented products (e.g. yogurt, sauerkraut) also need to have a specific pH to prevent spoilage.

pH affects taste and texture. It can also impact the behaviour of ingredients (e.g. protein, starch).

pH can impact the shelf life of a product.Β

pH relates to product consistency (taste, texture, smell, and behaviour).

pH management supports compliance. Based on the risk levels at your site and the applications carried out, pH testing could be a requirement of your customers or auditing body.

Our new Electrochemical Testing Range features three units that test exclusively for pH. There are also multi-parameter options available that test for a combination of pH and ORP, pH and Conductivity, or pH, ORP, and Conductivity.

  • Measures: pH and temperature
  • pH range: 1.00 to 14.00
  • High resolution: 0.01 pH
  • Supports 2-point calibration
  • Measures: pH and temperature
  • pH range: -2.00 to 16.00
  • High resolution: 0.01 pH
  • Supports 3-point calibration
  • Measures: pH and temperature
  • pH range: -2.00 to 16.00
  • High resolution: 0.01 pH
  • Supports 3-point calibration

All three units are pocket-size and portable, yet thanks to their IP67 waterproof rating, they are also durable enough for production and laboratory environments.

The trio have backlit LCDs that display calibration points and stability indicators, and the two units with replaceable electrodes have colour-coded screens for ease-of-use (green for measurements, blue for calibration, and red for errors).

Conductivity Pocket Testers

Conductivity levels directly correlate with the concentration of dissolved ions (e.g. salt, acid, brine) in a product or ingredient. Variations in conductivity can affect taste, texture, and shelf life, which is why food factories rely on Conductivity Pocket Testers to measure this important parameter. They use these measurements to drive standards of consistency and quality across every batch.

The Klipspringer range features two units that test for Conductivity. There are also multi-parameter options available. Aside from the difference in calibration points listed below, the two Conductivity Testers are almost exactly the same, so ultimately it will come down to whether you want a tester with a fixed or replaceable electrode – click here to explore the pros and cons.

  • Measures: conductivity and TDS
  • Conductivity range: 0.01 Β΅S to 199.9 mS
  • TDS range: 0.01 ppm to 199.9 ppt

As with our pH Pocket Testers, both units are compact yet durable, with an IP67 waterproof rating. Other similarities to the pH testers include the Automatic Temperature Compensation function and the auto-off function (after 8 minutes) to conserve battery life, along with the ability to automatically recognise Calibration Buffers for quick and easy setup.

ORP Pocket Testers

ORP (Oxidation-Reduction Potential) is a measurement (given in millivolts) relating to a solution’s ability to either oxidise or reduce substances – essentially how reactive it is.

Food factories will typically measure ORP levels as a means of quality control during the production of beverages and juices – tracking oxidation or reduction reactions with the potential to affect flavour, colour, and shelf life. Through this process, sites can detect unwanted oxidation, reducing the risk of a product’s taste or nutrients being compromised.

ORP levels can also be used to detect chemical or microbial contamination through redox imbalance, offering a quick way to identify issues that relate to food safety and shelf life.

In addition to this, ORP provides a real-time indicator of fermentation activity – useful for factories that manage the production of products like yogurt, beer, kimchi, and sauerkraut.

There is one unit within the Klipspringer Range that tests exclusively for ORP, but there are also multi-parameter units available.

  • Measures: ORP and temperature
  • Resolution: 0.1/1 mV (automatic scale)
  • Accuracy: Β±1 mV
  • Supports 1-point calibration (defined by the user)
  • Robust design: IP67-rated waterproof housing
  • Automatic Temperature Compensation
  • 3-Colour LCD displays calibration points and stability indicators
  • Auto-off function (after 8 minutes) to conserve battery life

Multi-Parameter Pocket Testers

If your food production site tests for pH, ORP andΒ Conductivity, or at least two of these parameters, a Multi-Parameter Pocket Tester could help to drive standards of operational efficiency.

Instead of wasting time switching between different instruments, preparing multiple samples, or waiting for separate readings, a multi-parameter tester will streamline this process. It will also make life easier for your operatives, as they will only have to carry around one portable tester instead of juggling multiple instruments. Fewer units will also mean less time spent on calibration and maintenance. There are three Multi-Parameter Pocket Testers within the range:

  • Measures: pH, ORP, and temperature
  • pH accuracy: Β±0.02 pH
  • pH resolution: 0.01 pH
  • ORP range: -1000/+1000 mV
  • Supports 3-point calibration
  • Measures: pH, conductivity, TDS, salt, and temperature.
  • Supports 3-point calibration for pH and Conductivity.
  • Measures pH, ORP, conductivity, TDS, salt, and temperature.
  • Supports 3-point calibration for pH and Conductivity.

All three units feature replaceable electrodes – helping to extend their lifespan and reduce overall costs. They are also pocket-size yet durable, with an IP67 waterproof rating.

As with many of the other units within this range, the trio have backlit LCDs that display calibration points and stability indicators, in addition to colour-coded screens for ease-of-use (green for measurements, blue for calibration, and red for errors).

They also offer Automatic Temperature Compensation for reliable results, an auto-off function (after 8 minutes) to conserve battery life, and will automatically recognise Calibration Buffers for quick and easy setup.

Fixed vs. Replaceable Electrodes

Within our Electrochemical Analysis Range, there are units with fixed and replaceable electrodes. Both designs are high-quality, offering impressive levels of accuracy, reliability, and durability. Even so, you may find that one style of Pocket Meter is better suited to your site than another.

Fixed Electrodes

  • Lower initial cost
  • Fewer small parts to manage
  • User-friendly and all-in-one design

Replaceable Electrodes

  • Extended meter lifespan
  • Long-term cost savings
  • Suited to harsh applications

As mentioned above, units with fixed and replaceable electrodes are suited to a wide range of applications and offer a variety of useful features.

The key difference is that units with replaceable electrodes typically generate long-term savings, as they give you the option of replacing just the electrode, instead of replacing the entire unit if damage occurs or the instrument stops working.

Electrodes typically have a shorter lifespan than the unit itself, so it is likely that opting for a replaceable electrode will help you to extend the lifespan of your instrument – saving money, hassle, and downtime.

So there you have it, an overview of our new Electrochemical Analysis Range, developed to support your site with the easy and accurate testing of pH, Conductivity, ORP, Salinity, TDS, and Temperature.
