How to Use a Rapid Allergen Test Kit

Our range of Rapid Allergen Test Kits will support your site in the detection of: Egg (Ovalbumin), Casein, Gluten, Soya, Peanut, Crustacean, and Buckwheat.

Developed with ease-of-use in mind, these Lateral Flow Tests can be completed in two simple steps. Even so, we wanted to produce an online Help Guide that you can return to if you are ever in need of a quick reminder.

In this Help Guide, you will find the relevant instructions for testing both surface residues and rinse water samples. You will also find a quick run down of how to read your results.

How do you use a Rapid Allergen Test Kit to test a surface swab sample?

The allergen tests within this range offer a detection accuracy of at least 0.5ppm, with the Gluten and Casein Allergen Tests offering a heightened accuracy of 0.4ppm.

The test sticks can also detect up to 200ppm. This makes them suitable for testing contaminated surfaces/equipment (e.g. swabbing a surface that has been used to prepare cheese). However, sampling directly from the allergen (swabbing a block of cheese) will produce a reading that sits far outside the 200ppm limits. Although it is unlikely that you would need to carry out an allergen test on an obvious contaminant, it is still worth noting the detection limits.

Now for the two-step testing process:

1. Unscrew the lid of the swab kit. Use the swab inside the bottle to thoroughly swab a 10x10cm square of the specified surface area. Place the swab back inside the bottle and shake vigorously. This result of this action will now be known as the Test Solution.

2. Lay a Test Stick down on a flat surface. Flip open the lid of the swab kit, invert, and squeeze the sides of the bottle to add 200μL (the equivalent of four drops) of the Test Solution to the Test Stick’s Sample Application Slot. Wait ten minutes for the result.

How do you use a Rapid Allergen Test Kit to test a rinse water sample?

1. Collect a sample of rinse water.

2. Lay a Test Stick down on a flat surface. Using a standard pipette, add 200μL (the equivalent of four drops) of the rinse water sample to the Test Stick’s Sample Application Slot. Wait ten minutes for the result.

Understanding the results of your Rapid Allergen Test Kit

Designed with ease-of-use in mind, your Rapid Allergen Tests produce results that can be understood by operatives of all skill levels. They are also suited to team members who do not have English as their first language.

As you would imagine, the Sample application slot is where you drop either your test solution or rinse water, the Test window is where your results show up, and the Confirmation window is the section that changes from clear to a red-purple if the test is valid.

Positive

A positive test result is indicated by a red-purple line in the test window. The confirmation window also has to be red, otherwise the test is considered invalid.

Negative

A negative test result is indicated by a completely clear test window. Again, the confirmation window has to be red, otherwise the test is considered invalid.

Invalid

An invalid test result is indicated by a clear confirmation window. If there isn’t any colour in the confirmation window, you will need to retest with a new stick.
