Bringing together leading voices from across the industry, the Food Safety Innovation Conference made a welcome return to the University of Lincoln on Tuesday 24th June.
Now in its third year, the Food Safety Innovation Conference took place earlier this week at the University of Lincoln. As to be expected, the day was a triumph of innovation, collaboration, and thought-provoking discussions.
With a dedicated group of industry sponsors and an impressive line-up of expert speakers, the 2025 Conference brought together leading voices from across the industry to impart real-life insights and actionable strategies.
In the interest of sharing some of the brilliant takeaways from the event, we have put together a brief overview. We will also be releasing a series of articles inspired by some of the key presentations and panel discussions, so stay tuned for more!
Opening Remarks
The Food Safety Innovation Conference is a collaborative effort from Klipspringer and Foodclean, so who better to deliver the welcome speech than Klipspringer Director, Alex Carlyon?
Alex did a brilliant job of welcoming delegates to the event, introducing the panel of expert speakers and running through the agenda for the day.

The Presentations
One of the key features of the Food Safety Innovation Conference is that all presentations are punchy and dynamic – addressing key trends and talking points within a 15-minute window.
Katie Satterthwaite – Setting the Scene
First to speak was Katie Satterthwaite, Director at Food Safety Excellence Ltd. As a Chartered Environmental Health Practitioner and the former Factory Standards Manager for Marks & Spencer, Katie is a trusted voice within the industry.
Drawing on the event’s theme for 2025 – Exploring innovations that reduce waste and enhance food safety across today’s evolving food industry – Katie explored the relationship between food safety and waste reduction.
Katie’s speech covered everything from plastic packaging to discarded food, running through the different areas of production where waste is most likely to occur. Katie also highlighted the potential cost benefits of food businesses making waste reduction a priority.

Declan Ferguson – People and Culture
Next to speak was Declan Ferguson, Director of Research and Development, Sustainability and Technical at Finnebrogue. Drawing on his 25 years of experience, Declan delivered a fantastic presentation on the industry’s most important asset: People and Culture.Β
Declan’s speech provided a behind-the-scenes look at Finnebrogue’s journey to the successful reduction of employee absence and employee turnover, all while winning high-profile awards such as 2024 Employer of the Year (Supplier) and 2024 Best Place to Work.

Chris Boardman – Cleaning and Hygiene
Site Director at Humdinger Foods, Chris Boardman, followed Declan with a presentation on Cleaning and Hygiene. He focused on advances in automation and resource utilisation, sharing the essential questions to ask when assessing your processes, labour, chemicals, and equipment.
Chris also painted a picture of what automation really looks like at a food production site and provided a clear road map for the review and enhancement of an operation.

Serkan Atlas – Operational Excellence
Next, Serkan Atlas spoke on Operational Excellence within the food industry. As the Head of Operational Excellence at EMEA, Olam Food Ingredients, Serkan was the perfect person to deliver this message.
Serkan’s presentation provided a closer look at the most prominent causes of product recalls, highlighted the power of psychological safety, and even explained how the ‘5 Whys? of Root Cause Analysis’ helped to preserve a historic monument.

Tim Fox – Key Note Speech
Finally, Tim Fox, Senior Coach at Gemba Vision, delivered the Key Note Speech. In his presentation, Tim spoke about the importance of looking outside of the industry to find learnings from excellence that could help to enhance food safety and waste reduction goals.
Tim shared practical tools that attendees could use to drive, accelerate, and monitor improvement. He also revealed the ’10 wastes’ that every site needs to address, covering everything from product defects to over-production.

The Workshops
Interactive Workshops are another standout feature of the Food Safety Innovation Conference. Led by important voices in the food production industry, they offer a dynamic mix of real-life insights and actionable strategies.
At the 2025 Conference, Workshop One was led by Denis Treacy, Former Chief Officer for Safety and Quality at Pladis Global, and Ben Grover, Group Account Manager at Klipspringer.
This session was all about the management of food safety events – offering practical advice on identifying and resolving emerging issues to avoid further escalation and product recall.

Running alongside this discussion was a workshop on Cleaning Optimisation – led by Dan Turner, CEO of Foodclean and Fraser Carlyon, Group Account Manager at Klipspringer.Β
This session built on the conference’s theme for 2025 and offered invaluable insights on the symbiotic relationship between reducing waste and improving food safety.

Delegates then moved onto their choice of Workshops Three and Four.
Workshop Three was led by two experts from C-Tech Automation – Seafresh Group: Matt Rayment, Chief Engineer and Astrid Dunning-Galo, Lead Software Engineer.
This session centred on AI and Digitalisation, with Matt and Astrid sharing usage methods for improving safety and efficiency. They also provided an actionable roadmap to factory digitalisation.

Finally, Workshop Four was a masterclass in Asset Care Excellence. It was led by Jonathan Reed, Managing Director at Hilton Foods UK & Ireland and Alan Edwards, Senior Operations Director at Activate Lubricants.
Together, Jonathan and Alan explained how a proactive approach across all stakeholders can create wins for food safety and waste reduction.

The Panel
Once everyone had enjoyed the delicious buffet lunch, delegates returned to the main theatre for an Interactive Panel session.
Chaired by Denis Treacy, the Former Chief Officer for Safety & Quality at Pladis Global, the panel was made up of the following industry experts:
- Neil Marshall, Former Global Director Quality & Food Safety, The Coca-Cola Company.
- Serkan Atlas, Head of Operational Excellence β EMEA, ofi (Olam Food Ingredients).
- Nic Sharman, Director, Nic Sharman Consultancy.
- Chris Gilbert-Wood, Director, CGW Foodtech.

In addition to discussing the key learnings of the day and identifying the best way to tackle future food safety challenges, the panel addressed a wide range of delegate questions. The experts covered topics including the reduction of staff turnover, the implementation of operational excellence, and the best methods for attracting new talent to the food production industry.
Closing words
Once the lively panel session had been brought to an end and the key questions had been answered, it was time for Alex to close the conference – thanking the event’s speakers, panellists, sponsors, and delegates for sharing their insight and expertise.Β

All in all, it was an inspiring day for everyone involved. The unique mix of dynamic presentations, interactive workshops, and engaging panel discussions contributed to a meaningful exchange of ideas on the current challenges and opportunities within the food industry.
We look forward to continuing these important conversations, working together to drive standards of food safety and waste reduction.
