White crystals on the tip of your electrode? Clear solution inside the protective cap?We explain why this isn't cause for concern when unpacking your equipment.

Two of the most common queries relating to Electrochemical Analysis are:

  1. There are white crystals around my electrode, is the equipment still suitable for use or has something gone wrong?
  2. When I opened up my equipment, there was a clear solution in the protective cap that covers the electrode, is there a problem with the instrument?

In both instances, there is no cause for concern. To understand more, take a look at the video guide below. We have also put together a brief written overview if you prefer.

White Crystals on your Electrode

When opening up your new equipment, you may notice that white crystals have formed around your electrode. This is not a fault.

The protective cap placed over your electrode contains Storage Solution. This helps to protect the electrode and extend its lifespan.

When the Storage Solution dries, it is normal for white crystals (aka salt deposits) to form.

To prevent contamination, make sure to remove the white crystals before use. You can do this by using warm water and white roll to gently wipe them away.

Solution in your Electrode Cap

As mentioned above, your electrode will arrive at your site with a protective cap that contains Storage Solution. This solution helps to keep the electrode hydrated – ensuring its accuracy and extending its lifespan.

In some instances, sites have confused this liquid with evidence of a leak. However, it is just the Storage Solution doing its job.

To make sure the Storage Solution is kept inside the protective cap and doesn’t spill, we recommend unscrewing the cap with the electrode pointing down. The solution should be settled in the bottom of the cap.

So there you have it, two of the most common queries relating to electrodes – resolved!

Whether it’s white crystals around your electrode or clear solution inside the protective cap, this doesn’t have to mean a fault with your equipment. Instead, the most likely explanation is that the Storage Solution inside the cap is keeping your electrode safe and accurate.
