Klipspringer launches a brand-new range of Environmental Swab Tests, supporting the detection of Listeria and E.coli.

Bacteria contamination has the potential to spell disaster for a food production site. From expensive product recalls and negative media attention to factory closure and consumer illness or even fatality, the consequences could be severe.

With this in mind, Klipspringer has launched a new range of Environmental Swabbing Tests, with testing kits available for Listeria and E.coli.

Listeria Test

Coliforms and E.coli Test

This new range of kits resolves the common industry challenges surrounding standard Environmental Swab Tests. The tests are:

  • Easy-to-use and self-contained, with only an incubator required
  • Viable for further testing, so samples can be sent directly to external laboratories
  • Suitable for storage at 5-25Β°C, so no need for refrigeration

The following article provides an overview of the benefits you can expect. Alternatively, if you want to discuss your options with our in-house Technical Team click here to get in touch.

1. Easy-to-use

The tests within our Environmental Swabbing Range have been designed with ease-of-use in mind and can be carried out by operatives of all skill levels.

The process can be completed in three steps:

  1. Swab a 10cm x 10cm surface area using a zig-zag motion.
  2. Place the swab inside the designated holder.
  3. Write any key information on the outside of the holder e.g. the date, the area you have tested, what you are testing for.
  4. Place the holder inside an incubator. A colour-change will indicate a positive result.

As mentioned, a distinct change in colour indicates a positive result, helping your team to quickly and easily identify the presence of the target bacteria.

  • For the Listeria Environmental Swab Test, the colour changes to a black/brown.
  • For the Coliforms and E.coli Environmental Swab Test, the colour changes from purple to yellow.

2. Ongoing Accuracy (Incubation Period)

If the target bacteria is present, you would expect to see a colour change after 8 hours of incubation.

However, you will be able to confirm the presence of bacteria after 24 hours of incubation.

Alternatively, you can wait until 48 hours of incubation if you want to detect an incredibly small concentration of bacteria. This is a suitable option because unlike many other Environmental Swabbing Tests, the Klipspringer range of testing kits are still incredibly accurate even at this stage.

3. Ongoing Viability (Cost and Time Savings)

In the case of a positive result, it is standard practice for a specimen to be sent away for testing at an external laboratory. Often, this will involve an external company sending out a van for collection.

Alternatively, some sites will order a second test that is suitable for sending away. Both of these options involve an additional cost and could result in increased downtime.

To resolve this common industry challenge, the Klipspringer range of Environment Swabbing Tests are viable for further testing and can be sent directly to external laboratories.
