Increasing Operational Efficiencywith Mobile Shadow Boards

Chaucer Foods UK is committed to driving continuous improvement through Lean Six Sigma and 5S methodologies. Central to this approach is equipment storage that supports organisation, visibility, and flexibility. Prior to partnering with Klipspringer, the site’s equipment storage fell short of these standards and presented two key challenges:

Challenge 1: Outdated Equipment Storage

The wall-mounted hanging systems were worn and outdated. This made it difficult to maintain an organised approach to equipment storage. Additionally, the appearance of these boards failed to reflect Chaucer Foods UK’s high operational standards and focus on continuous improvement.

Challenge 2: Limited Operational Efficiency

The fixed hanging systems were drilled into the factory walls, making them inflexible and poorly suited to a dynamic production environment. Equipment couldn’t be moved closer to production lines or operatives, limiting efficiency. Chaucer Foods UK needed a mobile storage solution that could adapt to changing site requirements.

Chaucer Foods UK is an industry leader in the baked and freeze-dried sector. Operating across global markets, the company collaborates with major retail and foodservice brands to deliver responsibly sourced ingredients.

With end-to-end manufacturing and packing capabilities, Chaucer Foods UK produces a wide range of products, including specialised soup and salad croutons, sprinkles, and value-added bread-based snacks.

Shadow Boards – Before and After

The images below show the contrast between the previous storage solutions and the new, purpose-built shadow boards.

The Solution – Mobile Shadow Boards

Klipspringer worked closely with Chaucer Foods UK to standardise their approach to equipment storage. The project involved a mix of ‘buy-it-now’ and bespoke shadow boards.

Mobile shadow boards were also introduced, featuring wheels and braked castors that allow them to be easily moved around site. This solution provides flexible, point-of-use access to equipment.

The Results – What was the impact?

Since the introduction of Klipspringer shadow boards, work areas and stations are more organised, with each board purpose-built for the equipment it is holding.

Mobile shadow boards have also cut down on unnecessary movement by bringing tools directly to the teams that need them. This has helped to streamline workflows and boost operational efficiency.

“Work areas are more organised through the introduction of purpose-built shadow boards. Mobile utensil stations reduce unnecessary movement, improving access to tools at the point of use and increasing operational efficiency.”
